Introduction
The topic I choose to talk about observing the society is Feminism but first let me introduce myself,
Hi to everyone who’s reading this, my name is Chalissa Bromfield or you can call me Kimmy. I’m 20 years old and I’m studying interior architecture at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi.
Since I was in high school I knew that I wanted to study about interior design it all started because my mom at that time she was working about events so she had to go to a lot of hotels mostly beautiful and luxury ones and I sometimes went with her. So I kind of absorb the hotels essence, liked the decorations, the concept, the design and the essence of it and overall I became liking and loving it so much that it became one of my interest and passion and it became my dream to design hotels of maybe actually being the owner.
I’m also interest in music, arts and craft, cooking, animals and traveling. First I didn’t go in deep with some of my interest I wasn’t the kind of person who opens up a lot at first just knew and liked them roughly but when I tried to open more about everything trying new things I’ve learned so much more about a lot of things and tend to understand a lot more. I’ve also learned how music, arts, animals, traveling can be link to designing and a lot of my perspective have changed since then. Every year I learn more about new things and I makes me having more courage to continue my passion and dreams and also having more dreams to achieve in the future.
So that my introduction, I hope you know something about me about my dreams and passion towards what I’m studying. It’s also something that I feel grateful about, studying about something that you dream of being in the future. Some of us are lucky to have that choice of choosing to achieve our dreams, I guess if that’s the first step of following it why should we stop?
Theory
For the reason why I chose Feminism to talk about observing the society is because Thai society since the early Thai civilization women have been something that is very restricted and can’t do a lot of things that men do and it also happen around the world. But now things have changed and social media has a lot of impact about nearly about everything, I used this example of social media because girls post pictures on social more than boys and there’s a lot of criticize and judgment and that can’t cause a lot of impact for one person.
Social structure and culture
I’ve learn many things about society in class, but the most memorable were these ones.
1. The first 1-3 weeks of class we were learning about social structure and culture, at first I really didn’t know what it really means and how important it really was. Like for real I won’t be finding the meaning on my own or I won’t be studying these topics on a daily bases , the last time I was studying about this topic was like 7th grade and it’s quite good to re-study and rememorize it. The more I knew about it the more I knew how important it is and how could be linked to other topics, like it’s the base for other topics.
What I got from this class was how our social structure is, where it starts from, how it should be arrange and how important the patterned social arrangements is , but it is also come up to the determinant of the actions of the individuals. But for overall it shows how the society can live together and how individuals can have relations between large social groups.
Human-rights
2. The class about human-rights that we had a guest and a little work shop.
This class was about human rights, we had a little work shop where everybody had a new character for themselves and were asked several questions that in the end we saw how the questions could separate the differences privilege for the characters. While I was in the front role a lot of my other friends were at the back. For me I didn’t knew how much it could effect the society or how bad it is in some situations even if we were the same age but if we were raised in different situations things could change a lot. I learned that no matter what race, color, where you were born or how you were raised everyone should have the same rights and same equals. People should be more educated and know more about this topic it should be talked about, cared about and though about the problems so it could help the society.
Feminism
3. The class about Feminism where’d we had a guest come and had a little work shop and lecture.
About feminism I think is something very close to me, I guess because I’m a girl. For this class I learn the true definition of feminism how I can raise a voice how I could be confident and how women can have rights to think and say and act. But in the class it also show how feminism can also be about human rights and equalities. Feminism is actually a political movements that seeks to establish educational and professional opportunities for women that are equal to men, so women can be equal to men can do what men do and all of this is also link to human-rights and human equalities.
Inequalities
I’ve also had classes about inequalities:
1. How do these inequalities affect your life in Thai society and/or the world? and have you ever been discriminated against? Explain.
The Inequalities about services form shops, convenient stores, mall or restaurants. I personally think nowadays people really judges you from how you look, what you are wearing, and from your outer skin not from the inside. From that point it shows how the society doesn’t have equality and how bad they treat people just from theirs look even we are all the same as ‘humans’. For example I’m really into cosmetics and makeup and l like to wear makeup nearly every day, I’m not going to say that I’m a professional but I think I can do better than the average. One day I when to a counter brand cosmetic and I dressed normally, nothing fancy and I was wearing flats and there was another women with me in the shop but she was well dressed and had a brand-named bag wearing heals and a nice dress, she was well service was treated nicely and the staff immediately ran up to her and gave her advice and suggestions, compared to me the staff didn’t come up to me at all but instead just ignored and stayed at the cashier and when I ask for some advice the staff said to wait for her to finish advising the other customer so I just decided to walk away.
So from that act it showed how inequality I was treated just by the way I was dressed and I was also being compared this act shouldn’t be treated to anyone ,everyone should be treated the same and in a good way. Service should be something that defines other people it should be something that it come from true caring and responsibility, it can effect many things including the brand itself even how good the brand or the product is but if the service id bad no one will want to go and buy the product.
2. Have you ever seen an act of injustice or discrimination? And how did these experience make you feel? Explain.
Yes, I have. For example my Dad is a foreigner he’s been living in Thailand since before I was born so that about 22-23 years. Even though he has been here for so long but he still gets discrimination by people charging more or sometimes over pricing things and telling lies about directions and a lot more. For example one time me and my dad came back from a vacation from Malaysia and we had to take a taxi back home from Suvarnabhumi Airport so we went and grap a taxi, the taxi driver wanted 1,000 baht and he also said that the others taxi will charge more and even if he uses the taxi meter it will cost more. So then I had to speak to him in Thai and told him that we live here so he would finally use the normal taxi meter and to get back home it cost not more than 400 baht.
So from this action it made me feel pity and bad for our own Thai society that we prefer money more than trustworthy and I actually feel bad for my dad that he has to go through this for most of the time but he says when he speaks Thai back they change their attitude and act more friendly towards him.
I think that we shouldn’t discrimination and separate different races or people from other countries, we should treat everyone the same and equally because at the end we are human breathing the same air living in the same world all together.
Share at least one way you can contribute to changing the way society works demonstrate how you can reimagine the world.
I would like to change the society by the social media having strict times having curfews and actual on-off times for playing on the phone or the internet. Because now around the world in many countries and a lot of people depend on the social media it’s like they have another world and sometimes the stuff that goes on social media doesn’t only stay on there. A lot of bullying and a lot of judgment that people take it seriously it can led to a lot of problems and violence like depression, anxiety, overthinking and maybe suicide for example like this article https://nypost.com/2017/11/14/rise-in-teen-suicide-connected-to-social-media-popularity-study/ it shows how social media can effect teens and suicide also fake information that gets distorted are happening a lot on the internet and it hard to trust someone and information because you can put anything or do whatever you want on social media.
I would be better if people would focus more on their real life instead of on their phones, using their phones just for contacting just like the old days where people could actually enjoy living their real life, so for me I would like to change the way that the social media has a big impact on making it less important and let people see how their can live and enjoy the real world more than their phones.
